Genesee Tops Jamestown Community College Olean 101-62

The Genesee Community College Cougars Men's Basketball team defeated the Jamestown Community College of Olean Jaguars 101-62 Tuesday night on their home court. With the victory, GCC's record is now 14-8 overall and 12-4 in Divisional play.

The Cougars were led offensively by Leon Nelson (Buffalo, NY) with 23 points and 17 rebounds and Terrell Rankin (Buffalo, NY) with 16 points. Other scorers for Genesee included Dashiem Cherry (Rockville Centre, NY) with 15 points, Kenton Chan-Man (Brooklyn, NY) with 12 points and both Aaron Allen (Claridge, PA) and Quintin Redfern (Cheektowaga, NY) each chiped in 10 points for the home squad.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday when they host the Nationally ranked Erie Community College Kats at 8:00 pm. The Women's team will also play ECC with the doubleheader set to start at 6:00 pm.

GCC Hosts Alfred State in a Basketball Doubleheader

The Genesee Community College Cougars Basketball program is hosting the Alfred State Pioneers this evening at the Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium on the GCC Batavia Campus. The Women come in tonights 6 pm contest with the Pioneers with a record of 12-5 while Alfred State comes in with a record of 10-8. The Cougar Women defeated the Erie Community College Cats 85-62 on Tuesday night in Buffalo while Alfred State's last contest was last Saturday when they dropped to the Jamestown Jayhawks 72-50.

The Cougar Men also host the visiting Pioneers tonight with a 8:00 pm tip-off. Genesee has a record of 10-7 after being defeated by nationally ranked ECC on Tuesday night by the score of 81-77. Alfred State comes in with a record of 9-11 after losing to Monroe Community College on Tuesday night 84-68

GCC Basketball Splits with Jamestown CC

The Genesee Community College Basketball program had the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks in the Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium last night for some NJCAA action. The Women dropped to the Jayhawks by the score of 80-74 while the Men defeated Jamestown 75-65.

The Women came into last night's battle with Jamestown winning 7 of their last 8, including a 78-71 victory over Mercyhurst NE on Tuesday. The game was the tale of two halfs. The first half saw the Cougars shoot 31% from the floor while the Jayhawks shot 42%. From behind the arch, Jamestown was 1-5 in the opening half while Genesee was 2-14 from three point land. Jamestown had a 39-31 lead going into the locker room.

The Cougars were led by Jamia Martin (Syracuse, NY) with 18 points while Krystie Laurey (Horseheads, NY) with 15 points. Good games were also put in by Marcades Caver (Bedford Heights, Ohio) and Shakatta Brown (Rochester, NY). The Jayhawks were led  Alicia Stebbins (Olean, NY) with a game high 23 points and Meaghan Rowland (Falconer, NY) with 17 points. Only two lead changes during the entire contest with Jamestown having a 18 point lead to open up the second half to put the game away. Overall the Cougars shot 38% from the floor while the Jayhawks shot 48% from the field. Genesee drops to 10-5 overall.

In the nightcap, the host Cougars came out firing from everywhere on the floor and defeated the Jayhawks 75-65. The Cougars were led in scoring by Leon Nelson (Buffalo, NY) with a game high 23 points. Jordan Henry (Mississauga, Ontario) put in 15 points while Aaron Allen (Claridge, PA) had 10 to lead Genesee to their 8th victory on the season. Jamestown was led by Thomas Lee (Performing Arts HS) with 16 points and Ashton Brown (Randolph, NY) with 15 points.

The Men's next contest is on Saturday at 3:00 pm while they take on Jamestown CC-Olean while the Women take on Erie Community College at the Burt Flickinger Center in Downtown Buffalo at 6:00 pm on January 26th before the Men do battle with the Kats at 8:00 pm that same night. The Cougars return home next Thursday (January 28th) for a doubleheader against Alfred State at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.

Cougars Split at Cougar Holiday Classic

Genesee Community College hosted their annual Cougar Holiday Classic this past weekend in their brand new Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium. The Men's Basketball team  dropped a heart breaker on Saturday to open up their portion of the tournament with a loss to the Community College of Rhode Island Knights by the score of 94-84 as free throws became a issue for Genesee as they missed eight in the first half alone and that would have made the game a lot closer than what it was if the Cougars were able to put them in the basket. Speaking of free throws, the Cougars went 19 for 28 from the charity stripe the entire contest. Arron Allen led the way for the Cougars in the contest with 17 points as Ryan Sorti led the way with 23 points for the visiting Knights of CCRI.
Sunday saw the Cougars play the ASA Institute of Brooklyn, NY and came up with the same result as Saturday as Genesee lost to the Avengers by the score of 68-48. Keenen Ellis was a major factor in the game as the big man had a height advantage of a good four inches on the tallest Cougar, which is Leon Nelson who is 6'7''. With the win, ASA is now perfect with a record of 9-0 while the Cougars fall to 5-3.

On the flip side, the Women's Basketball team successfully won both of their contests to win the Cougar Holiday Classic. They defeated ASA 92-70 behind 22 points from Ka'Mela Bender. Marcades Caver had 21 points with Krystie Laurey scoring 20 to lead the Cougars. Bender and Laurey were named to the All Tournament Team for their performance over the weekend. Saturday saw Genesee defeat CCRI 65-45. The Lady Cougars record is now 7-3.

Next up for the Cougars will be a game on Saturday against Lakeland CC starting with the Women playing at 1 and the Men to follow up at 3:00 pm. WGCC-FM to Cover Cougar Holiday Classic

WGCC-FM 90.7 will be covering the 2009 Cougar Holiday Classic at the newly renovated Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium.
The host Cougars will be playing the Community College of Rhode Island in the opening round on Saturday with the Women's Basketball team playing the first game at 2:00 pm with the Men's team playing CCRI in the nightcap at 8:00 pm.
In the Womens Bracket, ASA will be playing MCC at 4:00 pm. Mens Bracket features ASA, NCCC, ECC and your Genesee Community College Cougars.
