The Game That Shocked The Hockey World...Geneseo Beats #1 Oswego

The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team saw its 22-game winning streak come to an end after suffering a 3-1 loss at Geneseo on Saturday night. Luke Moodie gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead early in the second period, but the Ice Knights went on to score the next three goals for the victory in the final game of the regular season. Oswego State moved to 23-2-0 overall and 15-1-0 in the SUNYAC, while Geneseo ended the year at 13-10-2 overall and 9-6-1 in the league. The Lakers, who are the top-seed entering the SUNYAC Tournament, will host a semifinal game on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. against the lowest remaining seed from the play-in games on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Oswego State’s Luke Moodie (pictured) (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) broke a scoreless tie in the second period with his 13th goal of the season with assists going to linemates Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.) and Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.) at 5:26.  Geneseo called its lone timeout minutes later, which proved to be effective, as the Ice Knights evened the score off the stick of Jonathan Redlick.  Geneseo took advantage of a Laker interference penalty late in the frame when Stefan Decosse fed Jake Yard for the eventual game-winner at 17:27.

Oswego State tried to even the contest, but the Ice Knights took a two-score lead when David Arduin scored his 11th goal of the year at 15:09.  The Lakers called timeout following the goal, but were unable to send the game into overtime. 

It was a physical contest as both teams combined to commit 16 penalties for 59 minutes.  Oswego State went 0-for-3 with the skater advantage, while Geneseo went 1-for-6.  Laker goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) suffered his first loss of the season allowing three goals and making 20 saves in the losing effort.  The Ice Knights’ Cory Gershon compiled 33 saves, including 17 in the first period when Oswego State came out of the gates quickly.

Busy Weekend for Steve Petty Sports

This upcoming weekend is a busy one for this blogger as I am covering four sporting events in the span of three days. The weekend starts with one basketball game on Thrusday night as the Genesee Community College Cougars takes on the Medaille College JV team at 7:00 pm from the Anthony T Zambito Gymnasium on the GCC Batavia Campus. The Cougars (15-9) take on a strong team in the Medaille Mavericks.

Moving on to Friday night as the number one ranked team according to the latest USCHO D-III Polls, the Oswego State Lakers make a visit to the Tuttle North Athletic Center in Brockport to take on SUNYAC-foe Brockport Golden Eagles. Oswego (22-1-0, 14-0-0 SUNYAC) take on the host Golden Eagles who currently sits in 5th place in the SUNYAC standings with a record of 6-7-1 in conference and 12-10-1 overall. Brockport is led offensively by Sophomore James Cody (11-13) and Junior Ray Trembley (6-18) with 24 points each. Netminder Todd Sheridan has a .909 Save% with a record of 10-9-1. A night that Brockport would like to forget was back on December 4th in Oswego with the Lakers defeating the Golden Eagles 10-1. Faceoff time Friday night is set for 7:00 pm from SUNY Brockport.


Saturday afternoon starts with a rivalry game as the Monroe Community College Tribunes comes to Batavia to take on the Cougars in a doubleheader. The Women will do battle at 1:00 pm while the Men take the floor at 3:00 pm. The Cougar Women's team is coming off of a stong victory at Alfred State their last game and has a record of 14-7 and will be the number two seed for the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) Tournament. The Tribunes always bring a stong game when they take on the Cougars and Monroe took the first meeting up in Henrietta earlier this season by the score of 102-73. The Men however have a little something extra to play for on Saturday when they take on MCC. If the Cougars knock off the Tribunes, the Cougars could take over the number 2 spot in conference and get a first round bye in their conference tournament. If GCC falls, then the Cougars will play a play in game on Tuesday night on their home court. MCC took round one of the rivalry this year with a 99-86 victory in Henrietta.

Saturday night, the Lakers take the short ride down I-390 to the Ira S Wilson Ice Arena in Geneseo to take on the Geneseo Ice Knights. The Ice Knights (11-10-2, 7-6-1) currently sits 4th in the conference standings but with the violations that are against them, Geneseo is unable to participate in the post season. So Geneseo will be playing for pride more than anything as they try to knock off the number one team in the land. Geneseo is lead by senior forward Dan Brown who has 22 points (13-9) and sophomore Stefan Decosse who has 21 points (8-13). In net for the Ice Knights, both Adrian Rebeniuk and Cory Gershon have a .500 winning percentage.  The last time these two teams got together was back on December 5th on the shores of Lake Ontario with the host Lakers taking the 4-2 victory. Faceoff time is at 7:00 pm Saturday night in Geneseo.

Not to be left out, the Oswego State Women's Ice Hockey team has their final two games of the regular season this weekend as they take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals at the Campus Center Ice Arena. Fre iday's faceoff is at 7:00 pm and the finale on Satuday starts at 3:00 pm.
