Senior Weekend Not so Kind for Oswego State Women

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team trailed top-ranked Plattsburgh by two goals after two periods, but the Cardinals scored five goals in the final 20 minutes to hand the Lakers a 7-1 loss on Friday night at the Campus Center Arena in Oswego. Stephanie Moberg registered a hat trick to lead Plattsburgh, while Kristen Bond and Megan DiJulio added two goals each. The game was also “Pink at the Rink” night for Oswego State, which fell to 7-16-1 on the season and 5-11-1 in the ECAC West standings. The Cardinals improved to 21-1-2 overall and 16-0-1 in the league.
Plattsburgh struck first at 2:50 in the first period while short-handed as Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) stonewalled Brittany Meade on a breakaway.  Williams lost track of the puck, though, as the save pulled her out of the crease where Stephanie Moberg pounced on the rebound for the goal.  The Cardinals took a two-goal lead when Kristen Bond’s slap shot from the right point got past a screened Williams 11 seconds into Plattsburgh’s first power-play opportunity of the game at the 8:31 mark.

However, Oswego State cut the deficit in half minutes later when Jenna Kirkwood (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) tallied her 11th goal of the season after receiving a pass from Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) on an odd-skater rush.  Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, Ont.) also was credited with an assist on the goal.  The Cardinals had another skater advantage late in the frame resulting in Bond’s second score of the contest to give Plattsburgh a 3-1 lead at the break.

Physical play picked up in the second period as both squads combined to commit seven penalties.  Emi Williams kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the majority of the frame with several sprawling saves, but Plattsburgh would not be denied late in the stanza.  With a 5-on-3 skater edge, Moberg tallied her second goal as her shot from the left point went just underneath the crossbar at 18:02 to put the Cardinals ahead 4-1 after two periods.
At 8:09 in the third period, Moberg broke free from the Laker defense to pick up the hat trick by putting a shot through Williams’ five-hole to make the score 5-1 in favor of Plattsburgh.  It became a 6-1 contest when Megan DiJulio flipped the puck over Williams’ shoulder after beating an Oswego State defender up the left side of the rink.  DiJulio added another goal with 1:09 left in the game, as the Cardinals skated away with the 7-1 victory.

Emi Williams finished the night with 42 saves on 49 saves for the Lakers, while Mandy Mackrell made 13 saves for Plattsburgh.

The squads square off again on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Oswego as the Lakers celebrate Senior Day.

Oswego State Drops 1 Goal Game to Guest Utica College

Utica’s Eliza Kelley scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the second period as the Pioneers handed the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in Oswego. The Lakers controlled play in the final frame, but were unable to break through for the tying goal. The Pioneers improved to 10-11-2 overall and moved to fourth place in the ECAC West Standings at 6-8-2. Oswego State dropped to 7-12-1 on the season and remained in a tie for fifth place at 5-8-1.

Utica capitalized on an Oswego State turnover near the Pioneer bench where Meagan Sudik picked up the puck. She skated up the right side and got her shot past Laker goalie Emi Williams in the lower right side of the net at 15:54 in the first period.  The score stayed at 1-0 heading into the first intermission. 

Oswego State tied the game early in the second period as Lauren Gilpin took advantage of a scramble in front of the net at the 2:58 mark.  Erica Shapey and Kristin Metzger got the assists on Gilpin's first of the year. However, Utica quickly regained the one-goal advantage less than a minute later when Eliza Kelley deflected MacKenzie Roy’s shot past Williams. 

The Lakers applied heavy pressure to the Pioneer defense and goaltender Jill Doherty in the third period, but Utica withstood the test keeping Oswego State off of the board for the 2-1 win. Emi Williams registered 40 saves in the losing effort for the Lakers, while Jill Doherty tallied 21 saves for the Pioneers.

Oswego State will host non-conference Hamilton on Wednesday, February 10 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Arena.  Wednesday’s contest will also be broadcasted live over the Internet at www.oswego.edu/athletics/live. Also, WNYO 88.9 FM will be broadcasting the game starting with Countdown to Faceoff at 6:30 pm followed by the puck drop at 7:00.

Collins Scores Twice as Oswego beats Utica in Overtime

Oswego State Sophomore Kelly Collins (left)  notched two goals as the Oswego State Lakers defeated the Utica Pioneers 3-2 in OT at the Campus Center Ice Arena Saturday night. With the win, Oswego moves within one point of the Pioneers for 4th in the ECAC-West standings and puts them into a 3-way tie for second with Neumann and Buffalo State. With the victory, Oswego's record moves to 7-11-1 (5-7-1 in conference) while Utica drops to 9-11-2 and 5-8-2 in conference play.

Oswego got on the board first when Jillian Bergeron notched her 6th of the year with Jenna Kirkwood getting the assist at 12:59 of the first period. Bergeron was right on the door step to put the puck past Pioneer netminder Jill Doherty to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead and that was the score when the two teams went to the locker room after the first period.

Utica tied the game when it took advantage of a Laker tripping penalty midway through the second period when Lynny Gonzales’one-timer got past Oswego State goaltender Emi Williams. MacKenzie Roy got the lone assist on Gonzales' 11th on the year.  However, the tie did not last long as the Lakers’ Kelly Collins  ripped a wrist shot that went top shelf at the 12:50 mark to give Oswego a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period saw Utica have chance after chance but they were turned away everytime by Oswego State goalie Emi Williams. The Pioneers pulled goalie Jill Doherty for the extra attacker with 1:52 remaining on the clock and the strategy worked as Utica tied the game with 17.3 ticks left on the clock when Williams stopped the original shot from Rebecca Heim but the puck came right onto the stick of Gonzales who would put the puck in the net to force overtime.Jodie Galuzzi and Heim assisted on the tieing goal.

But the Lakers took control of the game in the extra session as they outshot Utica 6-1 in overtime including the game winning goal for Kelly Collins. Team Captain Angie Friesen took the shot from the point while on the powerplay and Collins was right there to bang home the rebound to give the Lakers the win and the important two points.

Emi Williams finished the contest with 26 saves, including 11 in the third period, to improve to 7-8-1.  The Pioneers’ Jill Doherty compiled 27 saves on 30 shots and her record is now 9-9-2. The same two teams will go at it tomorrow afternoon on Super Bowl Sunday at 3:00 pm from the shores of Lake Ontario. Oswego and Utica Meet Tonight for ECAC-West Women's Action

Its hockey night on the shores of Lake Ontario as the Oswego State Lakers and the Utica Pioneers square off for a 7:00 pm showdown at the Campus Center Ice Arena. Oswego comes into tonights contest with a record of 6-11-1 and a 4-7-1 mark in ECAC-West play while the Pioneers are 4th in conference with a conference record of 5-7-2 and an overall record of 9-10-2. Oswego is just 2 points behind Neumann and Buffalo State for 5th in conference.

These squads met at the Auditorium in Utica last season with the Pioneers taking both games by the scores of 4-0 and 3-1. Coming into tonight's game Oswego took 3 of a possible 4 points away from Cortland while Utica lost both of its games at RIT.

Laker Women Blanked By Host Hamilton Continentals 5-0

The Oswego State women’s hockey team struggled offensively as it fell to non-conference Hamilton 5-0 on Tuesday night in Clinton, N.Y. The Lakers trailed 2-0 heading into the third period, but allowed three goals in the final period in the loss. Laura DiCarlo led the Continentals with two goals and an assist. Oswego State fell to 5-9-0 on the season, while Hamilton improved to 5-6-2 overall.

DiCarlo notched the lone goal of the first period at the 15:53 mark for the Continentals with assists credited to Becky Cairns and Bret Lineberry. Hamilton tacked on a second goal midway through the second stanza as Cairns tallied her first goal of the season.

With the Continentals holding a 3-0 lead with 17:01 remaining in the contest, the Lakers had three power play opportunities in the final period for a chance to get back into the game, but were unable to capitalize. Hamilton sealed the victory late in the period after receiving unassisted goals from DiCarlo and Emily Baxter.

Oswego State goaltender Lana Peterson (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 27 of 32 shots in the losing effort, as she fell to 0-2-0 on the year. Becca Hazlett recorded 17 saves for the shutout to improve to 4-4-1 this season.

The Lakers return to the Campus Center Arena for their first home games in two months on Saturday against conference for Chatham. The puck is slated to drop at 3 p.m. before the #1 mens team takes to the ice against SUNYAC foe Fredonia.

Laker Women Drop 10-2 at #4 RIT

Fourth-ranked RIT scored three goals in the first five minutes and never looked back as it defeated the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team 10-2 on Saturday night in Rochester. Batavia native Katie Stack registered a hat trick for the Tigers, who out-shot the Lakers 59-16.

Kelly Collins, pictured (So., Fairport, N.Y.) and Jenna Kirkwood (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.) tallied the goals for Oswego State, which fell to 5-8-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the ECAC West. RIT raised its overall mark to 10-2-3 and its conference mark to 5-1-2.

The Tigers started the scoring 2:05 into the game when Megan Kobar notched her second goal of the season, and had a 3-0 lead nearly four minutes later after goals by Stack and Kristina Moss.  RIT added its fourth goal of the period at the 14:25 mark as Tenecia Hiller fed Ali Hills for the score.
With the Tigers holding a 7-0 lead, Kelly Collins ended the shutout bid at 17:43 in the second frame after she received a pass from Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, Ont.).  However, RIT tallied two more goals in the next minute to skate into the locker room with the score 9-1. 

After an Oswego State goaltending change, Jamie Parhar scored the last Tiger goal at 5:17 with assists going to Hiller and Belina Hooper.  Jenna Kirkwood posted her eighth goal of the season short-handed, as assists were credited to Natalie Rossi (Jr., Edison, N.J.) and Angie Friesen (Sr., Chilliwack, B.C.), for the final score of 10-2.

The Lakers’ Emi Williams (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) made 32 saves and allowed nine goals in the first two frames, while Lana Peterson (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) compiled 17 saves and allowed one goal in the third period.  Amy Torgerson finished the game with 14 saves on 16 shots.

The Lakers travel to Hamilton College on Tuesday night for a 7:00 pm showdown with the Continentals. Oswego State returns to the Campus Center Ice Arena for the first time in two months with a weekend series against Chatham starting on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m.

Oswego Drops First of Weekend Double vs #4 RIT

The Oswego State Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team played very well in their ECAC-West contest against the host RIT Tigers tonight at the Ritter Arena. The Lakers fell to5-7-0 on the season while the host Tigers move to 9-2-3 with the victory on home ice. 

RIT got on the board in the second period as Melissa Hall scored her 7th on the season at the 17:26 mark. The goal by Hall was the offense that Amy Torgerson needed as she stopped all eight shots that the Lakers put on net in the contest. The Tigers would score on a empty net goal by Shireen Irani. For Irani, that was her third on the season with the lone assist going to Kylie Mazzetta.

Emi Williams (pictured)  was outstanding in net for the Lakers as she stopped 49 of the 51 shots RIT put on the net. Williams falls to 5-5-0 on the season while Torgerson moves to 5-0-2 for the number four ranked Tigers, that according to the last USCHO D-III Womens poll. For her performance tonight, Williams was honored as the first star of the game. Other stars of the game included Melissa Hall and Kristina Moss, both of RIT. Both powerplays struggled in the contest as the Lakers went 0-10 as RIT, who came in with the best powerplay in D-III Womens hockey ended up 0-11. 

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 15-6-0. Last season, RIT defeated the Lakers, 9-2 and 5-0 in their two meetings at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The same two teams will get together on Saturday night for a 7:00 pm faceoff from the Ritter Arena at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Lakers Put 5 Spot on Castelton - Roll 6-1 in Rutland Herald Invitational Opener

The Oswego State Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team is one win away from successfully defending their Rutland Herald Invitational title. The Lakers came out flying and defeated the host Castleton Spartans by the score of 6-1 this afternoon. The Lakers were led in most part by the play of their powerplay units as they lit the lamp 3 times in the second period to boost the Laker offense and sparked them to the teams 5th victory on the season. 

The first goal of the contest was scored just before the three minute mark into the second period as Laker Alex Szypryt scored her first on the season with Kathryn Sbrocchi getting the lone helper. Then Emily Grippen took the Jenna Kirkwood pass to beat Spartan goaltenderKatharyn Dembowski to bump the Laker lead to 2-0 at the 6:25 mark. Then the Laker powerplay was on the ice and that led to three straight powerplay goals to end out the period. Fairport's Kelly Collins scored her fourth of the year with Jillian Bergeron and Aprilyn Gush getting the assists. Then the lead grew to 4-0 as former Plattsburgh Cardinal Tiarra Garrow scored her second of the season with Collins and Sbrocchi getting the helpers. Oswego would then score one more time with the player advantage as Brenna Weber scored her first of the season with Gush and Bryanna Forrest getting the assists.

The host Spartans would finally figure out Laker netminder Emi Williams as Jade Werger scored her second on the year with the assist going to Amy Costa. Lackawanna native Sarah Hannon would find the net for the second time this season for the Lakers sixth goal of the game with Jenna Kirkwood and team Captain Angie Friesen getting the assists and that would be how the game would end with Oswego winning 6-1.

Emi Williams made 22 saves in net for her fifth victory this season while Castleton's Katharyn Dembowski stopped 33 Oswego shots. The Lakers outshot the Spartans 39-23 including a 23-6 performance in the second period. Oswego moves on to play the winner of the Adrian/Potsdam game for the Championship tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm as the host Castleton will play the loser of the Adrian/Potsdam matchup.
